The Office of the High Commissioner for the Protection of Rights took part remotely in the annual seminar organised by the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) on 18 October 2021. The event is aimed at organisations promoting equality in the 47 Council of Europe member states, and in 2021 focused on the rights of LGBTI individuals.
The four thematic round tables held over the course of the day were complemented by testimony from people who have experienced discrimination due to their sexual orientation or gender, and professional and expert analysis of national and European cases. The discussions helped to shed light on the European situation, since there remain enormous disparities between the realities in different countries, and the difficulties encountered by members of the LGBTI community in these countries. This prompted a call for a global and harmonised approach to protecting human rights.
