Anne Eastwood, the High Commissioner for the Protection of Rights, Liberties and for Mediation, and her deputy, Cécile Vacarie-Bernard, had the pleasure of being received by President Stéphane Valeri and members of the National Council on Tuesday 12 January for a Plenary Review Commission in the Council’s chamber, during which they presented the report on the activities of the Office of the High Commissioner for 2017–2019.
With around 80 new cases referred and some 100 complaints handled each year over the three-year period, leading to an agreed outcome in a little more than 75% of justified cases, the results of the Office’s activity confirm the legitimate nature and value of this independent mechanism of institutional mediation, and the credibility of the amicable resolution it offers to citizens of the Principality.
During the presentation and subsequent discussions, participants agreed on the importance of communication between the two institutions, including as part of the Council’s preparatory work in areas which affect rights and liberties.
Stéphane Valeri paid tribute “to the considerable work that the Office of the High Commissioner has done in listening to people to help protect their rights and improve the quality of dialogue with the Government.”
For her part, Anne Eastwood welcomed, among other things, “the good practices adopted by the National Council in routinely publishing the High Commissioner’s recommendations on its website in advance of public debates.”
