On Friday 12 April, the High Commissioner was hosted by the Police Department, where she gave a presentation about the institution to the police officer cadet class of 2023/2024.
During the lively and informative speech, the High Commissioner reminded the cadets of the key principles of sound administration, including transparency, proportionality, respect for privacy, and the need to show due care and attention to vulnerable individuals. The High Commissioner stressed that these principles must be applied not just in legislation, regulations, and policymaking, but also in everyday practice and in dealings with public service users.
She also outlined the High Commissioner’s missions and the themes it deals with, emphasising three key actions in particular - protecting public service users’ rights, promoting anti-discrimination, and helping to shape new laws by issuing opinions on government draft bills and parliamentary draft bills - and how they are relevant to the current issues that the Police Department has to deal with.
The discussion then continued with a look at the actions that the High Commissioner is able to take, with the aim of ensuring that participants understand the institution’s role and are able to inform service public users about the avenues open to them in case of difficulties.
