At the invitation of Mr Maurizio Foglino, President of the Associazione Nazionale Forense (ANF) of San Remo, the High Commissioner gave a presentation on the new Monegasque institution of the Office of the High Commissioner for the Protection of Rights, Liberties and for Mediation to a large audience of lawyers and legal professionals in the formal surroundings of San Remo Town Hall on 20 April 2018.
Organised under the patronage of the Commune of San Remo as part of a series of conferences to mark the seventieth anniversary of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the symposium allowed the High Commissioner to provide an insight into the realities and work of the Office since it was established in 2014, and to demonstrate, using the example of the Monegasque “ombudsman”, the progress made possible by this new state body in the Principality, intended to ensure that the work of government focuses on conciliation and dialogue with citizens.
Numerous questions from the audience illustrated the keen interest shown by italian lawyers in this Monegasque institution, a strong symbol of the Principality of Monaco’s continuing progress in the field of human rights and the country’s determination to promote modern governance that respects the rights of citizens.
The discussions also highlighted the benefit to local people of the services offered by the institution, given the very close economic ties between the Principality and the Italian province of Imperia, from where several thousand cross-border workers set out each day.
Ms Anne Eastwood was accompanied on this trip by Ms Cinzia Colman, Director of MonteCarloIn magazine, and photographer Mr Alberto Colman. The High Commissioner also gave an interview to local Italian radio station Riviera24.
